In 1916 the “good roads” movement was in the news and auto touring was becoming very popular. Shelby, Osceola and Stromsburg were not only on the Meridian Highway, which according to the Nebraska Department of Roads website had graduated from markings painted on poles to real metal signs which read “Meridian Road” and gave the distance to the next county seat.
