The vendor’s recent commercial cited “SOCKS” as being “the most requested item in homeless shelters”!

That statement says ALOT, and also happens to be W-E-L-L understandable, for just think of that pleasant experience derived from slipping those “footsies” into comfortable cushioning, providing a degree of snuggly warmth, or moisture retrieval (such as with sports socks).

Whether one wears socks without shoes while inside, or also dons footwear to meet exterior elements, socks are a mainstay of our wardrobes. Some socks geared to interior usage incorporate protective sole elements to prevent slippage.

For once having experienced a broken toe (for which a medical doctor advised “nothing to do for it”), I tend to avoid open toe sandals. And we hear that wearing socks with sandals is “taboo”. Perhaps someday a brazen designer will incorporate an airy sock with washable, safe, sturdy sole and supportive top -- creating a “best of both worlds” so-to-speak, providing protective comfort, indoors or out. Within a period of time following its debut, it is likely that no one will give “the oddity” a thought!

Thinking what SOCKS mean to SO MANY should inspire humility AND definitely make it easier to count one’s blessings!

Perhaps collecting nice, new socks for homeless shelters, for women and children shelters, and for homes where our dear veterans reside would be a nice, ongoing community activity. The collection bins could be made available at easily accessed sites, preferably using the more sanitary “drop” type bins, with designated individuals accessing and processing the donations. This might become a great project for our wonderful students.

Socks can be purchased yearround, for grabbing great buys at great sales, thereby adjusting purchases within household budgets, so this seems to have potential for an o-n-g-o-i-n-g project, capable of generating a lot of good. Wish I could provide the aforementioned addressed vendor’s name, for I understand the entity donates a pair of socks for every pair purchased.

Trying to think of a related theme for this project, my mind keeps rolling with “ ‘KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF’ FOR OTHERS!” Perhaps that can be improved upon as well.
