Happening at the Library Summer Reading was busy at the Library. We had 30 children registered and they read books for a total of 208 hours. Our high reader was June Christy with 20.5 hours.

LINCOLN, Neb. — Thirteen years after competing in the Cornhusker State Games as a track and field athlete, Omaha native Taryn Smith is returning to the 42nd State Games in a new role— as the Opening Night torch lighter.

Cross County Class of 1996 Reunites at Festival

“Knee High by the Fourth of July” was my grandfather’s saying back in the early 1950s (remembers Bill Thompson, former owner of The Polk County News). The saying meant cornstalks should be knee high by the 4th of July. Pictured on July 4, 2026 is Jan Thompson at a cornfield along Highway 81 between Stromsburg and York. The stalks are about 6 feet tall. What a difference 70+ years make. Photo provided by Bill Thompson.
