Houston had 15” of rain. We would like 2”. The crops that are irrigated look good and farmers are working round the clock in this heat. Same for others working outside. It’s HOT!

August 8, 2002

Mary Ann Carter and Jean Alt were co-chairmen for The Quilters annual quilt show held during Shelby Days. They were pictured by the 97-piece raffle quilt made by The Quilters for this year’s show.

Ben and Holly Hopkins, Chris and Brenda Alt and Amy Hembloom attended the Comstock Rock concerts in Comstock July 19-21. They had a food vending trailer and sold steak and chick en fajitas. Their trailer is named Cactus Jacks.

The team Faded Glory placed third in the co-ed slow pitch softball tournament last weekend at Shelby Days. Team members are: Josh Hopwood, Tom Vrbka, Casey Ingalls, Zach Boss, Dusty Retzlaff, Jared Berggren, Sara Sweet, Sadie Church, Amanda Kohl, Mallory Berggren, Shannon Erickson and Katie Erickson.

August 13, 1992

Ron and Darla Hopwood are the parents of a son, Seth Aaron, born Sunday, August 9th at Butler County Health Care Center in David City. Jay Ingalls, Jeff Kuhnel, Jake

Jay Ingalls, Jeff Kuhnel, Jake Nekl and Tyler Nekl, seeking their first four-man scramble championship, shot an eleven under par 60 on Monday, August 3rd to take first place over seventeen teams in the second annual American Travel Center golf tournament in Lincoln.

School bells will ring in Shelby on August 24th to kick off the 1992-93 school year.

FORTY YEARS AGO

August 12, 1982

The Red Cross Bloodmobile was six pints over the goal last week. Receiving recognition for donating four gallons was Howard Whitmore. A three-gallon pin was given to Mervin Hiemer and one gallon pins went to Max ine Scow, Kelly Grossnicklaus and Carolyn DeRyke.

Messrs, and Mmes. Virgil Johansen and Max Hennings of Osceola accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Ron Coffin and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Grossnicklaus to the dinner theatre in Grand Island Wednesday. They observed the Grossnicklaus’ wedding anniver sary.

Approximately 175 area farmers participated in the Polk-Butler Twilight Crop and Irrigation Tour August 5th. They visited the farms of Eugene Gabel, Curtis Ingalls, Walt Crook, Eugene Glock and Ron Ruth.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

August 17, 1972

Work began Saturday morning as 15-20 volunteers began erecting a garage at the Methodist Church parsonage. By late afternoon the crew neared completion of the project. Nancie Thompson of Lincoln

Nancie Thompson of Lincoln and David Kobza, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Kobza, were married in Lincoln August 5th.

Rose and Louis Hastert re newed their wedding vows of fifty years ago at Sacred Heart Church Sunday morning. They were attended by their original wedding party, Engelbert Gabel, Viola Hastert Lux and Margaret Hastert Platz.

Karen Blevins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Blevins and 73 other Nebraska teenagers re turned from a seventeen day trip to New York City. The United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth was sponsored by Rebekahs and Oddfellows. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bernt

Word has been received from the Nebraska’FFA Executive Secretary that Roger Scow has been selected to be a member of the National FFA Chorus.

Dr. H.S. Eklund of Osceola was the highest bidder at the W.P. Conway land auction Tuesday afternoon. The 160 acres located nine miles south of Shelby sold for $217 per acre. Dennis, two-year old son of Mr.

August 27, 1942

Misses Maxine Kosch, Theresa Gabel and Dorothy Fozzard returned home last week after spending the past three months in Los Angeles, California.

Miss Wilma Wills is taking a ten-day vacation from her work at the Shelby post office, and spent part of the time in Lincoln with her brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Wills.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Grossnicklaus and Mildred left Tuesday for Camp San Luis Obispo, California where they will visit Corporal Raymond Grossnicklaus.

It may be news to some of our readers outside the state to learn that Polk County, Nebraska is this year going to harvest the largest crop of corn ever raised in the county.

SHELBY MARKETS: wheat, 33 cents; corn, 18 cents; oats, 11 cents; butter, 10 cents a pound; eggs, 12 cents a dozen.
