Competing in the Little Tuggers Tractor Pull in Bellwood was Jackson Logan who came in first place for ten-year olds and his sister, Jenna Logan who came in first place for seven-year olds. They get to compete at the state fair in Grand Island.

It is time once again to sign up tor the 2002-03 Girl Scout year. Registration night is September 3rd. Parents come with your girls, visit and get to know each other.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Schaf attended the funeral Friday for Mrs Schaf’s nephew, Donovan Carrico at the United Methodist Church in Aurora.
Denise Glock of Shelby Public Schools has been selected to participate in the Nebraska Teacher Corps for 2002-03. As participants in the program, teachers will receive training in service learning and design and implement a service learning project.
THIRTY YEARS AGO September 3, 1992
New students at Shelby Public School this year are Cecilia Rogers, first grade; Shawn Rogers and Michael Saxton, second grade, Hannah Saxton, fifth grade.
Dr. Marcie Goering joined the staff at the Butler County Health Care Center and Butler County Clinic in David City on September 1.
Nicholas Tyler, son of Tim and Grace Kula, was baptized by Father Maurice Current on Sunday, August 23rd during Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Alma Hartson of Shelby, Jean Peterson of Osceola and Max Quick of Stromsburg were county teachers featured in a story by Joni Ransom.
Greg Kuhnel is one of thirty Nebraskans selected to participate in the two year Leadership Education/ Action Development program.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award was presented to Mrs. Derold Abbott and the late Mr. Abbott at the Senior Citizen Center Friday. The Good Neighbor pin and plaque were presented by George Cemper.
FIFTY YEARS AGO September 7, 1972
Judy Vrbka, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Vrbka and La Verne Kuhnel, son of Mrs Emery Kuhnel were married September 2nd at Sacred Heart Church.
Gary Gabel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Duane Gabel, left to commence priesthood studies at the University of Dallas.
Bob Buchholz and Mary Graff are members of the Cornhusker Marching Band at the University of Nebraska.
Steve Kumpf, son of the George Kumpfs, sustained a broken leg Friday while at work at Behlen’s in Columbus. A pile of steel toppled and pinned him to the floor.

Shelby Merry Misses won their third consecutive purple ribbon in the song contest at the State Fair. Members of the group are Yvonne Bernt, Marvel Davis, Barbara Graff, JoLene and Linda Heibel, Diana Brigham, Tamara Glatter, Jolene McMeekin, Bonnie Moon, Marcia and Candy Taddiken and Marian Smith. Deanna Johansen is the accompanist.
Mrs. Joe Sedlak, Ronald and Diana flew home from San Diego California alter spending a week visiting in the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Harris and Mr. and Mrs. Mark Duren and Ann.
A family gathering was held at the home of Jessie Carter to help her celebrate her 80th birthday.
Last week Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Clark and daughter moved into their new home.
SEVENTY YEARS AGO September 4, 1952
Messrs and Misses Paul Rinke, Joe Rinke, Alfred Gabel, Charles Augustin, Matt Glattcr, Mrs Wallace Glattcr and their families were in Columbus Sunday for a reunion of relatives at the Joe Nicolas home.
The Shelby Board of Education held a welcoming party for the teachers at the parish hall Friday, August 29. Mrs. Tony Kerk- man and Mrs. Donald Armstrong served as co-hostesses.
Irene Kelley was in Shelby Monday visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs W. H. Kelley. She is on the faculty in the fine arts department at Wesleyan University in Lincoln.
EIGHTY YEARS AGO September 17, 1942
The Polk County Extension Service will present a radio broadcast over KMMJ, Grand Island. September 19. Management of the poultry flock will be discussed by Mrs. Rex Brigham and Doris Brigham of Shelby and County Agent Ray L. Cruise.
Weddings: Rachel Carter, daughter of Mr and Mrs. H L. Carter, was married to Paul Martin of Omaha September 9th in Omaha, Orthelia Matya, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Matya of Columbus, and Louis R. Kubicek, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kubicek Sr. of Shelby were married September 14th in Columbus.
A deal was closed last week in which Harold Taddiken purchased the residence property belonging to the John Rosenberry estate and located in east Shelby.
