SHELBY — Shelby-Rising City girls’ golf is building toward the future.
Huskies coach Sara Jensen said that this year’s team is the biggest in her five-year tenure. Of the 10 players who came out for the team this year, only one athlete — Aurora Slusarski — has more than one season of experience.
“We have five freshmen on the team,” she said. “I am excited to build on that.”
Jensen said that right now they are focusing on fundamentals and the rules of the game.
“Golf is a short season,” she said, adding they are just looking for consistant play on the course.
Slusarski is entering her final year with the team. She is just trying to share some of her experience with the rest of the roster.
“You don’t keep to yourself out there the entire time,” she said. “There is a connection.”
She added that some of her closest friends are people she played golf with.
Slusarski said that her personal goal for the season is to break 100 while playing 18 holes.
Senior Lillian Weddle said that joined the golf team to spend time with friends and to give her something to do after school. She has learned a lot despite this being her first season.
“It’s not about how how you swing,” she said. “It’s how far the ball goes.”
The Huskies open the season Friday at the West Point-Beemer Invite at Indian Trails Country Club in Norfolk with a 10 a.m. shot gun start.
