SHELBY — The only thing better than playing in front of the home fans is getting a win in front of the home fans.

Shelby-Rising City defeated Mead 28-14 to get their first victory of the year.

The Huskies (1-1) jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of 4-yard touchdown runs by Justin Knoll.

Mead (1-1) would respond in the second quarter with a 23-yard touchdown run when senior quarterback Luke Carritt would find daylight on a second down play where he faked the handoff and took off for the end zone.

The Huskies would add an insurance touchdown later in the second half on a 30-yard toss from freshman Logan Lindsley to sophomore Dalton Pokorney. Shelby-Rising City would find the end zone one more time, this time in the fourth quarter when Lindsley would score from 6 yards out.

Mead would score again in the fourth quarter, but by then the game was all-but-decided.

The Huskies outgained the Raiders 366 yards to 174, including 326 yards on the ground. The Huskies were also successful moving the chains — converting on 9-of-13 third down plays. The Huskie defense held strong on third down, only letting the Raiders convert 3-of-11 attempts.

Knoll led the Huskie ground attack, carrying the ball 22 times for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Gabe Dutton-Mofford carried the ball 16 times for 91 yards.

Lindsley would complete 2-of-5 pass attempts — with Pokorney catching both balls — for 40 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Knoll led the way with 10 tackles. Pokorney finished with seven tackles, including one for a loss of yards. Isaac Whitmore and Payton Sliva each finished with six tackles.

The Huskies are back on the road Friday night when they take on the Rebels. Arcadia/Loup City (1-1) is coming of a 46-0 win over North Central. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
