TEN YEARS AGO September 6, 2012
During halftime of the Shelby- Rising City football games the Booster Club sponsors a contest to see if participants can throw the football through the hole in a football target. Jeff Pinneo was successful on Friday night hitting it perfectly and receiving a certificate for a free pop at the concession stand.
Bridge winners on Monday at the senior center were Rosalie Gabel, Marge Gonnerman and Avis Rathje.
Shelby-Rising City volleyball won a close match in Stromsburg against Cross County beating the Lady Cougars three sets to two. The scores were 18-25, 25-21, 14-25, 25-22 and 15-13.
TWENTY YEARS AGO September 26, 2002
Shelby-Rising City homecoming candidates are Jon Tomasevicz, Colby Vrbka, Scott Crook, Betsy Nekl, Melissa Kear, Stacy Ott, Marie Hoffman and Tyson Micek.
The Huskies cruised to their third victory this fall. They defeated Waterloo/ Concordia by a score of 61-6. Shelby finds themselves rated number 10 in this weeks Lincoln Journal Star class D1 rankings.
The Lady Huskies traveled to Dodge and played solid volleyball to finish with two wins and one loss in the tough tournament.
The girls defeated Dodge and Brownell Talbot while losing in two to Spencer Naper. Deanna Noyd had 31 points, 13 set assists and four ace serves in the three matches overall.
THIRTY YEARS AGO October 1, 1992
The Shelby Huskie football team recorded a big win over conference foe Stromsburg on Friday, September 18 with a shut out score of 34-0.
Homecoming candidates at Shelby High School arc Shelly Gray, Amy Hernbloom, Stacey Rief. Jennifer Hegl, Travis DeRyke, Troy Bennett, Pat Paczosa and Roger Smith.
A covered dish dinner was held Sundav to welcome new parishioners to Sacred Heart Church. Those warmly welcomed were Nitha White, Dennis and Kimberlv Hoefer and family. Father Current played a guitar for entertainment and everyone enjoyed a sing along.
FORTY YEARS AGO September 30, 1982
Work on resurfacing of Highway 81-92 from west of Osceola to east of Shelby has been progressing at a steady rate.
Mr. and Mrs. William Kubicck received a phone call from Mr. and Mrs. Dclmar Alt of Bellflower, California wishing the Kubiceks a happy 37th wedding anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Rinke attended the spaghetti supper at St. Francis parish near David City Sunday. Later they visited Mr. and Mrs. Charles Augustin of Rising City.
About 45 relatives met Sunday at the Country Club in Columbus tor dinner in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Duren of Post Angeles. Washington, who have been visiting in the area.
FIFTY YEARS AGO October 5, 1972
Effective October 14, the two rural delivery routes served from the Shelby post office will be consolidated and served by one carrier, with the exception of a portion of Route 2 which will be an intermediate route served by the rural carrier from Osceola.
LeRoy Nickels of Columbus, Arlin Wiemer of York and Eugene Reisdorff have purchased the facilities of Ralston Purina Company at the industrial site in Columbus.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hasten and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Smith attended the Mum flower show at Mead on Sunday. Francis Hasten, brother of Louis, was in charge.
SIXTY YEARS AGO October 4, 1962
Diana Brigham was crowned Homecoming Queen in Shelby last Fridav.
Mrs Norval Augustin won first prize of 100 gallons of propane gas at the Coop open house last Friday. Larry Kresha and Emma Sch lesinger won second and third prizes respectively.
The Shelby Fire Department was called Saturday night to put out a fire which destroyed 1800 bushels of sealed corn near the Bob Gillespie home. Fire was cursed by lightning and the corn belonged to Bob Linda.
SEVENTY YEARS AGO October 2, 1952
Two accidents involving three trucks and one car occurred last Friday at the corner north of Shelby The first accident happened in the forenoon when a pickup driven by Ted Robak collided with a Shelby Oil company truck driven by Marion Abbott. The second accident involved a Lincoln Telephone Company car driven by Ralph Wait of Stromsbnrg and a semi trailer belonging to the Augustin Brothers. Injured in the first accident were Robak’s nephews, Jackie Lee and Eugene Micek. Wait suffered cuts and bruises and was treated at the Shelby hospital.
Over 100 Fillinger and Gondringer relatives held a dinner and reunion at the parish hall Sunday given in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Fillinger of San Diego.
EIGHTY YEARS AGO October 15, 1942
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Messing left Saturday for Moline, Illinois where they are visiting their daughter and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Glen Moon and Roger of Omaha drove to Shelby Sunday for a visit at the C.W. Moon home.
Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Ellsworth and Lucille and Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Ellsworth and Donnie of Litchfield were visitors in the Karl Ellsworth home Saturday and Sunday.
The total amount of scrap metal collected and brought to Shelby on Polk County’s Salvage Day Tuesday was 116 tons.
