TEN YEARS AGO September 6, 2012

Alex Jo Hinze exhibited the Reserve Champion Feeder Heifer at the 2012 Loup Valley Livestock Challenge in Ord on August 19. Her award was sponsored by Setlik Feedyards and presented by Doug Setlik.

The Polk County Historical Society is having their annual End of Season Open House at the museum grounds in Osceola on Sunday, September 16th from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Come join them for the re-dedication of the newly restored log cabin, car/tractor show, instrumental music, live demonstrations and the now finished school.

TWENTY YEARS AGO September 26, 2002

The Lady Bulldogs notched two more wins this past week to raise their season record to 7-2. They defeated previous unbeaten Fullerton and then East Butler. Ashley Wacker paced the attackers with 9 kills, while Shayla Retzlaff had 5 kills and Jessica Haack 4 kills. Megan Stowe was 13 for 14 serving with 9 points.

THIRTY YEARS AGO September 24, 1992

Cindy (Hays) Klepper was named as the recipient of the Outstanding Woman Athlete Award at Midland Lutheran College.

Bruce Theye joined the Polk County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy.

Lillian McDonald of McDonald’s Red & White grocery in Osceola was surprised with a reception on her 75th birthday.

Births: a daughter, Sarah Amy, to Ron and Susan Leimser on September 15; a daughter, Taylor Alea, to Scott and Jackie Walgren of Osceola on September 15, a daughter, Camille Delores, to Calvin and Jody Marak on September 19th.

FORTY YEARS AGO September 30, 1982

The 1982 Homecoming King and Queen revealed at halftime of the football game were Kent Johansen and Kathy Breeden with their attendants Jill Gabel and Trent Larson, Debbie Theis and Dann Sterup.

Wally McKeag of Osceola has been named Polk County Chairman for the Committee to re-elect Senator Ed Zorinsky.

Shirley Wright, Kathy Mooney, Donna Cole and Lynn Pomeroy of Stromsburg traveled to Omaha and attended a hair stylist convention held last weekend.

FIFTY YEARS AGO September 28, 1972

Nebraska Senator Terry Carpenter, the Democratic candidate for the United States Senate from Nebraska lambasted the state voters’ political apathy in a speech Monday evening in Osceola at the bi-annual Democratic fund raising dinner.

Nearly the entire north side of the square has had a new coat of paint. This week Mills Law Office is receiving a coat of white paint Karen Johnson is a member of the Kernels, the freshman cheerleading section, at the University of Nebraska.

SIXTY YEARS AGO September 27, 1962

The Polk County Historical Society organized two years ago, got its first material boost when Albert Ryan, Osceola barber, for sixty- seven years, donated the society a building for a museum.

Coach Ken Sipes’ football team won 6-0 over Clarks Friday in a game that featured rugged defense for both teams.

The latest addition to the list of new homes built in Osceola is a three level, four-bedroom brick and wood dwelling belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Orval Eikenhorst, located on Main Street, three blocks south of the square.

SEVENTY YEARS AGO September 25, 1952

Dr. C.R. Peterson, Osceola dentist, was elected president of the Nebraska Central Dental District at a meeting held Monday.

The Osceola Bulldogs defeated the Swedes for the third straight year last Friday evening by the margin of two touchdowns, both scored by Herman Anderson.

Demaris Johnson, freshman at Luther College in Wahoo, was selected as one of the cheerleaders of that school at a recent election.
