Stanley Craig Christensen passed away on December 16, 2022, at home in Boulder, Colorado.
His battle with cancer over the past year showed his courage and grace in facing life’s challenges. He was kind, generous, and strong until the end.
Stan was born on September 2, 1957, to Grenville and Edna Christensen in Greeley, Colorado. He was raised in Stromsburg, Nebraska along with his four siblings.
He received his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and shortly afterward moved to Colorado, in pursuit of his lifelong love of the outdoors. There, Stan embarked on a long and fulfilling career at the Environmental Protection Agency. One of his greatest achievements was the cleanup and restoration of the Arkansas River, which ensured that the trout and other wildlife could flourish in the Leadville area to this day. He was also responsible for the Bonita Peak cleanup of the Animas River. He was particularly adept at handling high profile, high stakes projects.
Outside of work, Stan remained enthralled by the outdoors and the mountains of Colorado in particular. An Eagle Scout himself, he was deeply involved with the local Boy Scouts, serving as a Cub Master for Pack 271 and general volunteer for Troop 78 for 11 years.
Stan married his wife of 39 years, Lynn Christensen, in Steamboat Springs, Colorado on June 23, 1983.
Together they had two kids, Lee and Sonia.
He loved spending time with his family, whether it be at the cabin in the mountains, on legendary Boy Scout trips, or on the slopes of Winter Park. He also loved driving, biking and hiking through the beautiful Colorado country, his idea of paradise. Stan is survived by his wife and children, his three grandchildren, Iola, Ragnar and Amelia, as well as his siblings Jim, Joan, and Janice, and his many cousins.
There will be a service held for him at the Ryssby Church in the spring.
