Cleanup Bills Advance

We are finally seeing some bills come out of committees and onto the legislative floor. Many of these are called “cleanup” bills to fix text and clarify existing laws, to remove outdated language or to extend dates for ongoing programs.

State Wrestling Experience

I had a busy weekend. First my daughter and I went to the Blake Shelton concert. It was good, but not my favorite. Almost no one can compare to Reba in country music, in my opinion. My daughter changed her mind about going at the last minute, but we made her go anyway.

School Finance Meets Property Tax Relief

His predecessor spent eight years pushing property tax relief. Now, Governor Jim Pillen wants to clearly tie said property tax relief to school finance. It’s up to the Legislature to figure out how to make that work. Lawmakers are used to people complaining about their property taxes.

‘Is All High Blood Pressure Hypertension?’

Many people find themselves being told, “your blood pressure is pretty high today!” You might be at the dentist’s office for a filling, in the emergency room getting stitches after an avocado mishap, or maybe you’re at your annual physical appointment.

Naps Do a Body Good

I don’t know about you, but I love taking a good nap. Sometimes on a Sunday afternoon I will run away from my four children after lunch and go hide in my bed.

You Can’t Buy Votes

When I was in grade school, I hatched a plan to run for student government. I thought someone could get elected by promising everyone free pizza or ice cream on Fridays. I don’t think I was serious, but I shared the idea with some friends and they said it was a bad idea. They were right.
