We’re just a few weeks away from a new season of Husker football. In living here for almost 24 years, I’ve become a fan. I think it’s almost impossible not to. As the Cornhuskers have struggled over the years, I’ve heard a general piece of coaching advice over and over again.

Heading Back to School

It’s August and in the Holtz Castle that means one thing — time to go back to school. My kids have a long commute for school each day. They roll out of bed, get dressed and walk down the hallway of our apartment to their piles of school books.

Community Connection

August is Cataract Awareness Month. A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens, which blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye. The lens of the eye is located behind the pupil and the colored iris, and is normally transparent.

Improving Air Travel

If you or a loved one has traveled recently, you’ve likely experienced flight delays or cancelations. A combination of factors has disrupted our air travel system. According to the latest federal data, an astounding 88,161 flights were canceled from January to May this year.

Lighthouses

For nearly a quarter of a century I taught in what is often referred to as the land of 10,000 lakes (and a zillion mosquitoes.) Each summer after school was out and things in my classroom were put away, I would load my car and head to a cabin along the North Shore of Lake Superior for a few days.

Students Participate in Central Honors Institute at CCC

Area students were among the 97 who participated in the Central Honors Institute July 10-14 at Central Community College-Columbus. Participants will be in the seventh or eighth grade this fall and have a high ability in language arts, math and/or science.

Countering Communist China

This month, I issued a proclamation declaring July 2022 as “Victims of Communism Month” in Nebraska.  This is the second year in a row that I’ve issued this proclamation as a way to highlight the atrocities committed by Communist governments.

Some Lessons Take Time

The Polk County Fair has come and gone. I really enjoyed getting to go out and cover the various shows and events last week. It was great seeing all the kids out there working with their animals or showing their mom and dad the ribbon they received on their exhibit.

Good Versus Evil

This weekend I had a Lord of the Rings movie marathon with my kids. I know the fantasy genre isn’t for everyone, so I won’t go into a lot of detail. I think the underlying message of the story is important. Honestly, I’m surprised that it was captured so well in the movies.
