TEN YEARS AGO September 6, 2012

Polk County 4-H member, Cale Pallas, was selected as one of the top 20 award winners in the 4-H Science competition. His exhibit showcased science by building a custom fishing rod. He was awarded a $100 prize.

Construction on the new Cornerstone Bank location at 400 Main Street in Stromsburg is well underway. The estimated completion time is spring of 2013.

A new fire department and ambulance building is under construction and on schedule. Move-in time for the fire trucks and ambulances is scheduled for November or December.

TWENTY YEARS AGO September 26, 2002

Russ Hanson of Stromsburg was the winner of week number three of The Polk County News football contest, missing only one game of sixteen. He was the only contestant to miss only one pick this week.

Bonnie Renquist of Racine, Wisconsin and Don Wolfe of Benedict were married October 4, 1952 at Zion Lutheran Church in Benedict. They will be celebrating their 50th year of marriage privately with their three children and families and a few other close family members. Hosting this will be Dan and Sandy Wolfe of Polk, Ken and Deb Wesch of Arlington and Dave Wolfe of Columbus.

The Cougars used a strong second quarter to remain undefeated on the season and move their record to 3-0. The Cougars beat Sandy Creek by a score of 43-7. Toby Ball rushed for 77 yards on 9 carries and 2 rushing touchdowns. Nate Hengelfelt added a 49-yard run and Casey Thelen had three carries for 30 yards in the game.

THIRTY YEARS AGO October 1, 1992

The “Yard of the Month” contest, sponsored by the Stromsburg Bank, has announced that the yard of Carl Johnson is this month’s winner. This is the final contest of the season.

Army Reserve Pvt. Jessie D. Matlock has completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood in Waynesville, Missouri.

Stromsburg battled the Genoa Orioles on a rainy Friday night, September 25, but the Genoa defense was able to hold the Vikings scoreless while they yielded 21 points in the contest.

Dan and Lisa Oquist of Stromsburg are proud parents of a son, Zachery Daniel, born September 28th at Annie Jeffrey Hospital.

FORTY YEARS AGO September 30, 1982

Crowned king and queen at Stromsburg High School Homecoming festivities were Diane Johnson, daughter of Mr and Mrs Marlowe Johnson and Scott King, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chuck King.

Severt and Shirley Peterson have been selected for membership on the Farm Advisory Council, a nationwide panel of 500 farm and ranch families sponsored by Farm Journal magazine.

Three light frosts were reported in this community last week. The first came Monday morning, the second was Tuesday.

FIFTY YEARS AGO September 28, 1972

Lori Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Baker, was one of 27 girls graduating from the practical nursing course at Platte College in Columbus.

Philip Swasko was hospitalized at Annie Jeffrey Hospital September 22 with injuries to his neck, arm and ankle following a motorcycle- auto accident. Swasko’s 1972 Honda cycle was in collision with a 1972 Chevrolet dnven by Michael Lorenz of Osmond.

Jill Ellis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Ellis, received a letter of commendation honoring her for high performance on the 1972 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test.

SIXTY YEARS AGO September 27, 1962

Rev. and Mrs. Howard Olson entertained the members of the Builders Bible Class of the Baptist Church at their home Monday evening.

Eighty-five relatives and friends attended an open house in honor of Carl Lundborg’s 80th birthday on Sunday.

Roger Smith, the son of Mr. and Mrs Gordon Smith, was on a People to People Goodwill mission in Europe.

The gridders made it three in a row by defeating Palmer 39-0.

SEVENTY YEARS AGO September 25, 1952

Lt. James G. Ekstrand left for Omaha on Saturday for Patrick Air Base at Cocoa, Florida from where he will be transferred to serve on Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas Mrs. Ekstrand and daughter, Carolyn will make their home here and with her parents at Sutton.

The Stromsburg Project Club met at the home of Mrs. Paul Swanson on September 18th. Mrs. Lloyd Erickson presented the lesson on music.

Mrs Lyle Kreis left on Saturday for Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California, where she joined her husband, who is stationed there.

EIGHTY YEARS AGO October 1, 1942

O.V. Eschilman closed his barber shop the first of the week and stored his equipment and left for Grand Island on Tuesday where he has accepted a job in the Ordinance plant.

Scott & Anderson have closed their coal office and Ad Knerr who had been in charge, will go to Utah to make his home with his son Mike.

Misses Anna and Frieda Forss left today for Omaha where both have employment at the Immanuel Hospital there.

Annette Larson was a freshman at Midland College at Fremont. Donald Nordlund, a senior at Fremont, had been appointed as his class representative on the student court.
