Bookworms is a group of residents who meet together to enjoy a reading time of inspirational short stories. With it being Christmas Season we are currently reading stories pertaining to the events of the season. One we read recently was about a young girl who wanted a bicycle more than anything else in the world, yet year after year went by without a bicycle for various reasons. Her parents even gave her a special trip with just her (she was one of 6 children), yet it wasn’t what her heart desired. Finally, the Christmas she was 9, she received her much desired bicycle. This little story led to conversation about Christmas wishes we had as youngsters. One resident said she had so many for so many years she couldn’t remember any of them. Another stated she was always grateful for whatever she received as her parents didn’t have much. Typically there was one toy, puzzle or board game for the family, then each one received a little sack of nuts, perhaps some candy and fruit.
Then we read a story of a family who “adopted” their next door neighbors, a lady and her crippled daughter, as family. Each Christmas they invited them over for Christmas dinner and to enjoy their tree while opening presents. One year it snowed so much they were not even able to walk over, but the father of the family saved the day with his wheelbarrow. He gathered up the crippled daughter and placed her in the wheelbarrow while the elder lady held on to his arm they made their way to the family house and enjoyed their time together. This story triggered some memories which were fun to discuss of Christmas’s past. It was agreed we are all truly blessed and need to take time to be grateful for all we have.
