Jim McLean served in the Navy reserve from 1952 to 1956, then he joined the Coast Guard and was active duty from 1956-1960. After that he served in the Coast Guard reserves from 1960-1968. He was commissioned in 1957. He served on the Coast Guard Cutter Wynona in the North Pacific off the coast of Russia and the Aleutian Islands. They were patroling waters watching for submarines.
