Employee Shortage Hits Nebraska

Nebraska is full of hard-working people, and generally our unemployment rate is low. However lately nationwide there is an employee shortage. There are more jobs than there are workers. The baby boomers are retiring (or wanting to), and that takes a large portion of the working people.

4-H Family Receives Award

In observance of the Week of the Volunteer, Nebraska 4-H is proud to celebrate some of the 2023 Nebraska 4-H Volunteer Award Winners. The Ray and Betty Vrbka family is receiving the Multi-Generation Family of Volunteers Award.

A SOBER REMINDER

OSCEOLA— Every four years, Osceola hosts a mock car accident. They do this in timing with prom so students can see the serious effect of drinking and driving. This year was no exception. Five high school students pretended to be in a car accident on Monday.

PCN Sports, Website Earn Awards

LINCOLN — The Polk County News won multiple awards over the weekend in this year’s Nebraska Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. The PCN staff won a first place award for sports page for division C and first place award for the PCN website, www.polkcountynews.net, for divisions C and D.

Stromsburg’s annual National Day of Prayer Breakfast will be held at 6:30 a.m. May 4, at the Viking Center. No advance tickets are necessary; there will be a freewill offering at the door. Ross Berck will be the speaker for this year’s event. Ross has lived most of his life in the Stromsburg area.

Rock Creek State Park Reopens

Rock Creek Station State Historical Park and the adjacent state recreation area near Fairbury have reopened to the public after a wildfire burned 1,800 acres of land.

Shelby Clean-Up Day April 28

The Shelby Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Shelby are sponsoring Shelby Community Clean-Up again this year. Clean-Up is reserved for Shelby residents only. Trucks will be located in the parking area at the intersection of Pine and Walnut (east of Shelby Lumber by the car wash).
