An Open House honoring Al Gutz on his 80th birthday will be held January 13 from 2-4:00 p.m. at the Shelby Legion Club. The event is being hosted by his wife Vemie of Shelby and their children.
The Shelby Huskies rebounded from their first loss of the season to win their own holiday tournament. Shelby downed Cedar Bluffs and then Palmer in the championship game. In the Cedar Bluffs game Jason Schmidt led all scorers with 18 points and Ryan Shanle also reached double figures with 11. In play against Palmer Shanle scored 12 points while Scott Crook had 11.
A benefit for Julie (Rathje) Bejot will be held on Sunday, January 20th at the Rising City Fire Hall. A freewill offering meal will be served and there will be a bake sale.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
January 16, 1992
Twenty-five firemen from Osceola, David City, Seward, Rising City, Bellwood, Gresham and Shelby participated in a skills test for area firemen working to ward a Firefighter 1 certification at the Shelby Fire Hall.
The Lady Huskies were defeated January 9 by the Osceola Bulldogs 58-39.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Grossnickiaus attended a 40th anniver sary party for Mr. and Mrs. LaVern Boss on Saturday evening. Sunday afternoon they were at the open house honoring Mr. and Mrs. Allen Whitney of Columbus on their 70th wedding anniversary.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kumpf, Leslie and Renee returned home recently after spending the Christmas holidays with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Dellovechio in Hong Kong.
Shelby Mayor Derold (Bud) Abbott died unexpectedly at his home Sunday, January 10th.
Sixteen relatives and friends enjoyed a pizza supper Sunday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Augustin to honor Meshelle on her 16th birthday.

January 13, 1972
Tom Kopetzky was named to the honor roll at Platte College for the first semester.
Mrs. Gladys Miller’s son, Blaine of near Surprise, broke his leg last week while rounding up his cattle on horseback.
Nine ladies met at the home of Mrs. Bob Vrbka last week to make plans for the March of Dimes campaign January 12-24.
Pat Gabriel, Florence Alt, Irene Smith, Mary Taddiken and Loyola Hiemer won prizes at the social hour following St. Ann’s Altar Sodality meeting January 6th.
SIXTY YEARS AGO
January 11, 1962
Jim Scow, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Scow, has been awarded a Regents Scholarship to the University of Nebraska.
Lloyd Scow, a Shelby resident, was fatally injured in an accident involving two trucks and the Scow car two miles east of Shelby. His wife, Eva was listed in serious condition at the hospital in Osceola. Drivers of the two trucks were not seriously injured.
Dr. and Mrs. R.L. Bierbower and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Blevins returned Tuesday morning from a ten day trip to Hawaii.
SEVENTY YEARS AGO
January 17, 1952
Kenneth Hopwood and Bill Buchholz drove to Denver last Wednesday where they have entered two horses in the stock show.
Forrest Bahm and Bill Arndt, both stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas spent the weekend in Shelby with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bahm.
The Nebraska State Railway Commission ruled that the Union Pacific Railway would discontinue operation of two daily trains through Shelby. They are motor trains which operate from Grand Island to Lincoln in the evening. Passenger service of course will be entirely removed as far as rail is concerned.
EIGHTY YEARS AGO
January 15, 1942
Jeanne Cook, Doris Jaax, John Pearson, Maxine Suddarth, Donna Jean Abbott, Phyllis Hastert, Jean Rasp, Loree Swan, Charlotte Ball, Virginia Ingalls and Eugene Sterup will participate in the Shelby High School Dramatic Club contest January 21.
Sergeant James Brigham returned to Jacksonville, Florida last week after spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Brigham.
Claude Umshler enlisted in the U.S. Navy and left Tuesday for Omaha.
