The Lady Huskies beat the High Plains Storm by a score of 62-30. Maddie Scow had 12 rebounds, 3 blocked shots and 14 points. Chatrice White added 27 points.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend an open house for Richard Schaf’s 80th birthday on Saturday. January 19th from 2- 4:00 p.m at the Shelby Legion Club.

Farmers National Company is pleased to announce that Mike Bernt of Columbus, was recently recognized for his outstanding efforts in developing new business for the company during 2001. Bernt is a professional farm manager and real estate sales agent with Farmer National Company.

The Shelby Huskies raised their record to 10-1 with weekend wins. They defeated Ne. Lutheran 68-40 and Lincoln Lutheran 67-49 In the Ne Lutheran game Grant Gabel led the way for Shelby as he produced a double double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. In the Lincoln Lutheran game Crook took team honors in the rebounding department with eight, Justin Schmidt had seven assists and brother Jason had four steals.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

January 30, 1992

Joe Dey has been assigned head football coach for the 1992- 93 school year He replaces John O’Brien, who announced earlier this year that he would no longer fill the position.

The Shelby Huskies defeated three teams to claim the Central Eight Conference Tournament title.

An open house for Sheriff Steven L. Cherry will be held Sunday, February 2 at the Polk County Sheriff’s Office in Osceola.

Kevin Benson appeared on KOLN-TV Monday evening following the 10:00 p.m sports news. He is a member of the Big Brother organization affiliated with the YMCA program.

FORTY YEARS AGO

January 28, 1982

Another new business, The Beauty Den, has been established in Shelby Donna Gerdes is the proprietor and her shop is adjacent to the Gerdes home on Euclid Avenue.

Thirty-three guests gathered for dinner at the Shelby Senior Center January 25 to mark the completion of one year’s activities at the center.

Mr. and Mrs. Kent White of Woodburn, Iowa spent six days with his mother, Mildred White and other relatives after attending the funeral of his father, Walter White.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

January 27, 1972

Delores Czuba, Marilyn Coffin, Brian Hopwood, Paulette Kumpf, Pam Brigham, Janet Kampovitz, Lorraine Rafert and Gloria Morgan were all on the roll of excellence at Shelby High School.

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith have received a letter from Edith Inks of Chicago stating that she has returned home from the hospital.

She had broken her leg in a fall some time ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Victor Krumbach and Edith Hiemer were Sunday supper guests of the Lawrence Richters near Ceresco. Jim Krumbach, who spent 18 months in Germany is now discharged.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

January 25, 1962

Diana Brigham, Deana Johansen and Bonnie Moon had all A’s for the first semester of work at Shelby High School.

Shelby High will present the Broadway Show, “Annie Get Your Gun” on February 10th.

Sarah Grossnicklaus Haggy, 94, died in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She and her husband, the late Fred Grossnicklaus, were former Polk County residents.

Weddings: Lois Suddarth and Leonard Vrbka, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Vrbka, were married Jan uary 26 at Sacred Heart Church. Margaret Thomas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Thomas, wed Lavern F. Boss, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Boss of Columbus, were married January 27th in Columbus.

Willis Wills and Wayne Coffin left Friday for a vacation in San Antonio, Texas.

EIGHTY YEARS AGO

January 29, 1942

Miss Nadine Jaax, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Jaax, underwent a tonsil operation at the Shelby hospital last Thursday.

Emil Kubicek, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kubicek and Eileen Nauenburg of Columbus were married January 28 in Columbus.

Mr. and Mrs. Jon Hossack and Larry of Lincoln drove to Shelby Saturday and visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William McKeag.

Winners of superior ratings in the local declamatory contest at the high school last Wednesday were John Pearson, Jean Rasp and Charlotte Ball.
