Pvt. Keaton P. Zysset, a 2011 graduate of Rising City High
School, graduated from the United States Marine Corps boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego on December 21,2011. Pvt. Zysset successfully completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at MCRD San Diego.

The twin daughters of Mike and Eliana Hiemer were baptized at the St. Paul Catholic Church in Tampa, Florida. Sponsors for Meagan Carolyn were Daisy Hiemer and Dennis Hiemer by proxy. For Emma Christina sponsors were Frank and Veronica Zambuto of Tampa, Florida. Dinner followed at a cafe.
The Shelby Huskies fell six points short as they lost to Osceola 56-50 in the championship game of the Central Eight Confer ence. Justin Schmidt was the only Shelby player to reach double figures for the game. Scott Crook finished with nine points while Gabel had eight.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
February 6, 1992
Rick Chochon assumed the presidency of the First National Bank of Shelby on Thursday, January 2 and a move by his family from Arnold was completed the middle of the month.
Tony Bowe was one of the district winners in the Knights of Columbus free throw contest January 26th in Columbus.
Shelby traveled to Sandy Creek last Saturday night to take on a C-1 rated team. Shelby, 11-1, suffered their second loss of the season by a score of 55-51.

February 4, 1982
Shelby High School seniors Susan Whitmore and Jeff Scow have been accepted for membership in the United States Collegiate Wind Band, a highly selective musical organization which will make a concert tour of seven European countries in July and August.
Mr. and Mrs. Myron Callaghan of Lincoln were Sunday guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bunch. Harold’s birthday was celebrated.
The girls placed second and the boys took third in the Crossroads Conference Basketball Tournament held at York.

Mary Ann Scow, Mary Nicolas, Anna Bernt, Louise Krumbach and Nellie Kuhnel helped at the mission sewing circle in Columbus on Wednesday.
Mrs. Tom Carter and Mrs. John Langer attended a bridal shower in Seward for Ann Jasa, bride-to-be of Jack Carter.
Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Dunning visited with Mr. and Mrs. John D. Abbott at Blair Sunday.
Marilyn Yungdahl ran out of diesel fuel at a stoplight in Fremont and traffic was backed up for miles according to a Shelby reporter.

February 1, 1962
A new IGA store will open in Shelby this week according to new owners John Rongish and Ernest Rongish. The new store will be located in the former Economy Food Market
The Shelby Fire Department was called to the Jerome Reisdorff home Wednesday to extinguish a fire in a newly built brooder. Damage was held to a minimum.
H. I. Perry returned Saturday from Florida where he spent a few days.

February 7, 1952
Frank McMeekin will have a general farm sale at his place four miles north of Shelby on February 14.
John Gabriel and John Tomasevicz returned home Saturday after a week’s absence. Mr. Gabriel visited the Studebaker factory in South Bend, Indiana and the Allis-Chalmers and Case factories in Racine, Wisconsin. Mr. Tomasevicz attended a Studebaker service school at South Bend for the week.
Lois Mytholar will play the lead in the Village Players’ production of “Lena Rivers” February 18 and 19.
EIGHTY YEARS AGO
February 5, 1942
Mr and Mrs Walter Cornish celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary quietly in the home of their son, Kenneth Cornish of Osceola. Mr. Cornish was pub lisher of The Sun for many years until his retirement in 1938.
It is expected that 535 persons in Polk County will register with the selective service program on February 14 and 16.
