National Day of Prayer was first celebrated in 1952, as a co-founded effort by the United States Congress and President Harry S. Truman. President Truman and every president since has signed a proclamation, that on the first Thursday of May, Americans are encouraged to pray in our churches and synagogues in public venues, in groups and as individuals.
