Reader: 81 is Not Congested

Body

I have no kids in school, so my interest is personal. I think the people who drive to school are more than capable of watching for cars before entering highway 81. They are ask to make the same decisions in driving on any highway so it shouldn’t be too hard to continue. Personally, I mow for CVA coop and use the corner a lot, as well as the intersections along 81 and don’t see a problem. The same or maybe a few more will use the highway more, but in the seven miles between York and Benedict I count cars a lot and the average is usually four cars per mile or 1,300 feet average between cars. I would expect it will be a few more after it is expanded though not a lot.

I think it is a bad idea to go through any town with an interstate highway. How often do you stop in a town because you want to buy anything. We usually stop for gas or food and bathrooms. Not to buy clothes, mowers, etc. and it raises havoc with the truck traffic and local traffic as well. I vote for a bypass going around any town even Columbus. It is my opinion that there would be more potential for accidents with semis going through town at 40 miles per hour or so than at the school corner at 70 miles per hour. I am not a fan of roundabouts, the only roundabout I have seen that I liked was the one by Greeley, Colorado, which is about a mile around and doesn’t cause any congestion by slowing traffic, us old people, semis or confusion about which lane to get in to get off and a RCUT.

Polk County News is doing a good job with the paper and appreciate to ability to express my opinion,
