Reflecting an ongoing frustration across Nebraska, a common theme has emerged here in the Legislature with quite a few bills having been introduced to address property taxes in our state.

His predecessor spent eight years pushing property tax relief. Now, Governor Jim Pillen wants to clearly tie said property tax relief to school finance. It’s up to the Legislature to figure out how to make that work. Lawmakers are used to people complaining about their property taxes.

When I was in grade school, I hatched a plan to run for student government. I thought someone could get elected by promising everyone free pizza or ice cream on Fridays. I don’t think I was serious, but I shared the idea with some friends and they said it was a bad idea. They were right.

I looked up the history of the term “trial balloon” and en.wiktionary.org said it was a “small balloon released into the sky to determine the direction and tendency of winds in the upper air before a manned ascent in a larger balloon; (figuratively) prospective action to test acceptance.
