As I do almost daily, I stopped by the local post office last Friday to retrieve the day’s deluge of bills, ads, and news. I exchanged brief pleasantries with the one other person in the lobby before heading to my box.

Area Students Make Dean’s Lists

Iowa State University has released its Dean’s List for fall semester 2021. To be included a student must have earned a gradepoint average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours.

Combating Opioid Addiction

I recently read an article in the Lincoln Journal Star that tells an all-too-familiar story. In 2012, Dr. Jeff Fraser, a family practice doctor from Lincoln, was diagnosed with prostate cancer. After his third treatment, another doctor prescribed him hydrocodone for back pain caused by the cancer.

Last year a young lady I know faced the hardest decision she’d ever had to make. Upon discovering that she was pregnant, her boyfriend gave her an ultimatum. She could either keep him or keep the baby. She couldn’t have both.

Reaffirming the Right to Life

We’re on the cusp of a historic moment in America. After 49 years, the Supreme Court is set to revisit the infamous Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in 1973. This year, they have an opportunity to undo one of the worst decisions ever made by our nation’s highest court.

Community Connection

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month – Half of all blindness can be prevented. A vision screening can help identify people who are at risk for eye disease. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually steals sight without warning and often without symptoms.

“Fruitcake Toss Day”

My hubby and I received a fruitcake for Christmas. We were delighted! We love eating the rich blend of fruit, nuts, spices, and molasses. Apparently not everyone appreciates this traditional holiday food as much as we do.
