For the love of Christmas

I love Christmas. I love the lights on houses. I love Christmas presents under the tree. I can’t wait to watch my kids open their presents on Christmas morning. But as much as I love the holiday season, I have to take a step back and remember the reason for the season.

Christmas is around the corner. It’s now December. Do you ever think our seasons need moved a little? That equinox thing must be off, as I don’t think December 20th or 22nd is the first day of winter. The first day of winter should be December 1, spring March 1, summer June 1, and fall September 1.

Earlier this year, Congress appeared to be on the cusp of passing a TikTok ban. For those who have experienced the bitter partisanship in contemporary American politics, it might have seemed surprising.

My son is a talker. I tell people he’s afraid that he will suffocate if he stops talking. But to be honest, he comes by it naturally. My dad and both his brothers are conversationalists, too. You don’t start a conversation with any of them unless you have some time, but it’s worth it.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK Growing up my family would always drive around and look at Christmas lights. My parents would load the three kids into the van and we would spend an evening driving all over northwest Indiana to see various elaborate decorative displays.

ALAN’S ANECDOTES I enjoy learning word meanings. Sometimes the history of a word’s meaning is very interesting. One of those words is “amuse.” It comes from “muse” which means to “think” and “a” meaning “not.” So “amuse” means to “not think.” I think that fits.

Home Alone

BETH’S BITS I felt a little bit like Kevin McAllister over Thanksgiving. If you don’t remember who that is, he is the kid from the “Home Alone” movies. My husband and kids went to Indiana to visit his family. The cat and I stayed home, so I could work and cover the lighting of the square.
