30 Years of Quilting

The Quilters’Guild from Shelby have been gathering for 30 years and it’s time to celebrate! Come celebrate on Monday, September 25th at 7:30 p.m. at the Shelby Senior Center. The public is invited to attend. Enjoy a quilt show where members showcase their favorite quilts from the past 30 years.

Art and Quilt Show Attracts Many to Museum

The Polk County Historical Society hosted a quilt and art show at the museum on Sunday afternoon. Approximately 50 visitors came to view the art and quilts. There were 15 quilts and several pieces of art from eight local artists.

Rathman Honored with Quilt of Valor

At the Shelby Farmer’s Market last Wednesday, a Quilt of Valor was presented to Dylan Rathman. Dylan is an active marine, having enlisted in 2021. He did his basic training in San Diego, California. He is currently serving in Raider Company, 2nd Battalion 4th Marines.

Lightning Hits Shelby

Shelby fire chief Jon Eller reported the Shelby Fire and Shelby Ambulance were dispatched to the east Central Valley Ag elevator in Shelby for a lightning strike on Friday morning, July 7th. This is where a new elevator is being built. The Polk County Sheriff's office was also on scene.

Schools Not Immune From Teacher Shortage

It is a battle you hear about all the time and Polk County school districts are not immune. Nebraska is facing a teacher shortage. Cross County, High Plains, Osceola and Shelby-Rising City schools, along with all other districts in the region, are battling over the same teacher candidates.

Shelby-RC Announces Girls’ Wrestling Co-Op

Shelby-Rising City School has announced a girls’ wrestling co-op. The school board voted for a co-op for girls’ wrestling with East Butler and David City, just like the softball co-op. This is a 2-year agreement and will be re-assessed after that.

2023-24 School Calendar Changes

School will begin at 8:10 AM (not 8:30). Doors open and staff reports at 7:45 AM. School day will end at 3:15 for elementary and 3:27 for middle school/high school. Start of the new school year is August 16th for students.

Shelby-Rising City Receives National Banner School

Only 15 schools in Nebraska were named National Banner Schools. Shelby-Rising City Public School was selected through the National Special Olympics Board as a school that strives for inclusion. They were awarded with banners on Tuesday.
