Winter Sport Classifications Released

The Nebraska School Activities Association released the 2022-2023 winter classifications recently. Basketball begins in late November and wrestling begins in early December. Boys Basketball Cross County will be Class C-2. High Plains and Shelby-Rising City will both participate in Class D-1.

Area football teams looking for Week 5 wins

GILTNER — Friday Night Lights will be bright a day early this week. Osceola (3-1) travels to Giltner (2-2) for a rare Thursday night game. Giltner is coming off a 28-12 loss to High Plains. The Bulldogs are still riding high, coming off a 58-20 homecoming win last week.

Slammers beat Broncos, 10-0 in 4 innings

POLK — Polk County used a seven-run second inning and a two-hit pitching performance to cruise to their 16th win on the season. Savanna Boden went 2-for-2 with two RBI and scored twice, while Kylee Krol went 2-for-2 with one RBI and scored twice for the Slammers. Courtney Sunday had three RBI.

Storm gets 2 more wins

POLK — The Storm picked up a pair of wins on Tuesday, beating Elba and St. Edward in straight sets. High Plains beat Elba 25-14, 25-20. Kenzie Wruble led the way with eight kills, five digs and two aces. Emily Ackerson had 10 digs and two aces. High Plains also got the win over St.

Storm Wins With Heavy Hearts, 28-12

GILTNER — High Plains may play 8-man football, but there were 10 guys on the field all night. Friday night’s 28-12 win over Giltner almost didn’t even happen. Tragedy struck the High Plains football family Friday when Nate Peterson, 43, of Stromsburg was killed in a vehicle accident.

No. 7 Cougars 3-1, Storm 2-2 at Invite

STROMSBURG — Cross County suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, going 3-1 on the day to finish as runner-up at the Cougar Invite. In the first round, Class C-2 No. 7 Cross County took on Nebraska Lutheran and won 25-18, 25-14. High Plains defeated East Butler 25-20, 29-31, 26-24.

Panthers, Slammers Compete at David City

DAVID CITY — Polk County and Blue River each went 1-2 on the day at the David City Invite on Saturday, each dropping games to some of the best teams in the state. Polk County opened the day with a 2-1 win over Mercy.

Slammers run out of time against No. 2 Bluehawks

HASTINGS — Polk County split a pair of games on Thursday, falling to Class C No. 2 St. Cecilia 5-4 and winning a come from behind game against Fillmore Central/Exeter-Milligan, 7-4. The Slammers (14-6) were behind 3-0 in the fourth inning before they scored their first run against the Panthers.

Area teams gear-up for week 4 football

NO. 2 COUGARS LOOK TO STAY UNBEATEN As area high school football teams prepare for the fourth week of the season, Class D-1 No. 2 Cross County is the only county school to remain unbeaten. The Cougars (3-0) are averaging 64 points per contest and have scored over 70 points in the last two weeks.
