Storm Wins With Heavy Hearts, 28-12

GILTNER — High Plains may play 8-man football, but there were 10 guys on the field all night. Friday night’s 28-12 win over Giltner almost didn’t even happen. Tragedy struck the High Plains football family Friday when Nate Peterson, 43, of Stromsburg was killed in a vehicle accident.

No. 7 Cougars 3-1, Storm 2-2 at Invite

STROMSBURG — Cross County suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, going 3-1 on the day to finish as runner-up at the Cougar Invite. In the first round, Class C-2 No. 7 Cross County took on Nebraska Lutheran and won 25-18, 25-14. High Plains defeated East Butler 25-20, 29-31, 26-24.

Panthers, Slammers Compete at David City

DAVID CITY — Polk County and Blue River each went 1-2 on the day at the David City Invite on Saturday, each dropping games to some of the best teams in the state. Polk County opened the day with a 2-1 win over Mercy.

Slammers run out of time against No. 2 Bluehawks

HASTINGS — Polk County split a pair of games on Thursday, falling to Class C No. 2 St. Cecilia 5-4 and winning a come from behind game against Fillmore Central/Exeter-Milligan, 7-4. The Slammers (14-6) were behind 3-0 in the fourth inning before they scored their first run against the Panthers.

Area teams gear-up for week 4 football

NO. 2 COUGARS LOOK TO STAY UNBEATEN As area high school football teams prepare for the fourth week of the season, Class D-1 No. 2 Cross County is the only county school to remain unbeaten. The Cougars (3-0) are averaging 64 points per contest and have scored over 70 points in the last two weeks.

Slammers split with Gothenburg, Kearney Catholic

GOTHENBURG — Polk County split games Tuesday, falling 13-1 to Gothenburg before bouncing back for a 10-8 come-from-behind win over Kearney Catholic. The Slammers were held to just four hits in the three-inning loss to the Swedes. Polk County batters struck out six times in the contest.

Storm split with Riverside, Palmer

CEDAR RAPIDS — High Plains split with Riverside and Palmer on Tuesday. The Storm (6-3) defeated Palmer (1-9), 25-16, 25-17. Riverside (8-2) presented more of a problem for High Plains, edging the Storm 25-20, 25-19 in a close match. Riverside also picked up a win over Palmer, 25-14, 25-19.

Storm tame Tigers, get 57-14 win

CLARKS — High Plains came into Friday’s game against East Butler on a mission. Entering the game on a two-game losing streak, the Storm offense did whatever it wanted to Friday night, running over the Tigers 57-14 to send the homecoming fans home happy.

Storm Goes 3-0 at High Plains Invite

POLK — After getting two wins in the season’s first week, the High Plains varsity volleyball team played against two of the area’s better small school programs recently, losing to Fullerton and Class D-1 No. 8 Nebraska Christian last week.

Polk County slams 11 hits in win over Ord

STROMSBURG — The Polk County offense came alive against Ord on Thursday, The Slammers (12-4) scored three runs in the first inning and added two insurance runs in the third to take control of the Chanticleers (1-9), beating them 11-3 in five innings. The Slammers slugged out 11 hits in the game.
