July Events at the Library: Wednesday, July 8th: Lava Lamp Experiment 11 AM, wear a blue hat July 13th to 17th: Summer reading: Pre-K to 1st grade 9:0010:30 AM, 2nd-5th grade 11 AM to 12:30 PM, 6th grade and up: 1-2:30 PM.

The 1996 Class from Cross County gathered this past weekend with 11 members. Cross County Class of 1996 Reunites at Festival

“Knee High by the Fourth of July” was my grandfather’s saying back in the early 1950s (remembers Bill Thompson, former owner of The Polk County News). The saying meant cornstalks should be knee high by the 4th of July. Pictured on July 4, 2026 is Jan Thompson at a cornfield along Highway 81 between Stromsburg and York. The stalks are about 6 feet tall. What a difference 70+ years make. Photo provided by Bill Thompson.

Swede Fest Tractor Pull Results

STROMSBURG - The Swedish Festival tractor pull was held on Saturday, June 20th at the Fire Hall. It was moved inside due to the heavy rain.AKRS Equipment and Pallas Seeds sponsored the pull. The Stromsburg VFD graciously provided a dry location and seating!
