Centennial Board of Education will meet Monday, August 14th, at 8 p.m. Centennial Back to School Night will be Tuesday, August 15th. Centennial first day of classes will be Thursday, August 17th, with early dismissal at 1:30.

Calvary Lutheran Church in Swede Home will celebrate 150 years this Sunday with a special worship service. Bishop Johnson will be there with a celebration meal to follow.

COUNTRY SCHOOL BUILDING SURVIVES

Unfortunately for the school district number 5 building, it is set to be demolished in the coming weeks. This building opened in 1905 with the Valley’s first school teacher, Mrs. Nellie Benson. Originally there were 47 pupils in the school. At one time Mrs.
Irene Dunning may be the oldest woman in Polk County. Recently she celebrated her 103rd birthday at Good Samaritan Society nursing home in Osceola. Irene graduated from Osceola High School, was a teacher and spent most of her life in Shelby. She commented “well, I’m at a nice place with you nice people, so I’m going to stay around a little while longer”. PCN photo by Craig Pinley.
