September is College Savings Month

LINCOLN — Governor Pete Ricketts is calling attention to the importance of saving for a loved one’s future education by issuing a proclamation declaring September as College Savings Month.

Report from Joe Rystrom, Delegate Grass roots movement bring changes to Nebraska GOP. It was an exciting time full of unexpected events. To begin with there were more people there than have been to the convention in many years. Many of the delegates were first-timers.

Rieken Wins Football Contest For Week One

Robert Rieken of Osceola, is this week’s Polk County News Football Contest winner! He missed two entries but was closest on the passing yards by the Huskers. Runners up also missing two were Bob Zelasney of Osceola and Betty Jorgensen of Cambridge.

BARGAIN SHOPPING

This last weekend was an event called “Bargains for You on 92”. It was put together by Sheri Steager of Surprise with help from ten other people, including Denise Andersen of Osceola, Maxine Goelz of Shelby, Lori Pesicka Frasch of Shelby and Ashley Eickmeier of Rising City.

Area 4-H’ers on Display at State Fair

GRAND ISLAND — Polk County is well represented at the Nebraska State Fair. Over the weekend, 4-H projects were judged and fashion and livestock shows took place. Projects are now on display. The 4-H exhibits open every day at 10 a.m. in the FFA 4-H Building.

Gresham Man Changes Plea

Travis Patchin, age 40, of Gresham has pleaded no contest to a charge of possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and carrying a concealed weapon. This is a Class I misdeanor.

Historic Windows Restored

They’re gone...but they will return. In the near future, the three large stained or colored glass windows on the side of the Stromsburg United Methodist Church facing 5th Street will be removed by Architectural Glassarts of Lincoln Nebraska.

The Red Cross Blood Drive will be in Stromsburg on Monday, September 12th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Stromsburg Evangelical Free Church. The Blood Drive is being sponsored by Chapter AR P.E.O. in Stromsburg. Appointments can be made for the drive.
