Mary Alice Scholz, age 84, of Columbus, formerly of Shelby, Nebraska, passed away May 29, 2026 at Brookestone Acres in Columbus.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 3, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby with Father Mark Cyza officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 2 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. with a 6:00 p.m. Rosary at the church. Organist will beAvis Rathje. Musical selections will be “Be Not Afraid”, “Only A Shadow”, “One Bread, One Body”, and “Amazing Grace.” Pallbearers will be Chase Kumpf, Randy Aase, Parker Coffin, Corey Vrbka, Heath Vrbka, and Ryan Sanley. Interment will be in the Shelby Cemetery.

Mary Alice was born January 25, 1942 in Grand Island, Nebraska to Ted J. and Vava G. (Minick) Pieters. She attended school in Rising City, graduating from Rising City High School.

On September 3, 1962 she was united in marriage to Jerome C. Scholz at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby. To this union two children were born. They lived on the family farm north of Shelby where MaryAlice was a farm wife. She was also employed at BD’s in Columbus where she worked until her children were born.

In 2021 they moved to Meridian Gardens in Columbus. Jerome passed away January 27, 2024. Alice moved to BrookestoneAcres in January of 2026 where she resided until her passing.

She was a member of Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Anne’s Guild.

She enjoyed gardening, plants, baking and cooking.

Survivors include her daughter Debra J. Scholz and son Douglas J. Scholz, both of Shelby; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jerome; parents Ted and Vava Pieters; and twin brother Larry J. Pieters.

Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated later.
