Where would we be without volunteers? Probably nowhere, or dead. Volunteer firemen (fire people?) put out fires, volunteer EMTs help save lives, etc. I’m thankful for these and so many other volunteers.
I have served as a volunteer in several ways.

When Stats Bite You
Rick Holtz
It may shock you to find out, but I a little bit of a nerd.
I love looking at numbers and stats. Here is a stat for you: Each week the Polk County News picks one boy and one girl as its Athlete of the Week. Most weeks Beth and I are picking and the athlete to choose is obvious.

Who is Listening?
Alan Sparrow
I learned early on as a parent that our kids listen to us. They know what we tell them to do. Sadly, I didn’t learn this because they are always good at doing what they’re told. No, I know they listen because they can tell me when their brother or sister isn’t doing what they’re told.

Devotional Reflections by Caroline Russell
Every so often on a cold winter’s night, after the supper dishes were done, my mom would get out a bag of Jolly Time popcorn and proceed to pour some of the contents into her trusty cast iron skillet.

Shoveling your driveway or sidewalk can be very strenuous work. Some experts say that shoveling snow is as strenuous as running 9 miles an hour.

Taking a Look at Nebraska’s Young Leaders
Deb Fischer
Nebraska has a rich heritage of military service. Over the years, thousands of Nebraskans have answered the call and served our country heroically.
I am proud that many young Nebraskans want to continue this important tradition of service to our country.

The Fix Is In, Legislature Off to Rocky Start
J. L. Schmidt - Capitol View
My observation from the opening days of the 108th Nebraska Legislature: “The fix is in!” Google it, information worth having as this highly partisan influenced session stumbles on. In the 20’s, when the term first surfaced, it meant the deal was done – probably in advance.

Why I Appointed Ricketts to the Senate
Jim Pillen
I had the opportunity this week to appoint Nebraska’s next U.S. Senator, former Governor Pete Ricketts. Only five times in our state’s history has a Governor had this privilege. The process was not one that I took lightly.

Unpacking the Boxes
Rick Holtz
Do you ever feel like you are living out of a bunch of boxes?
Well, last weekend my family moved to our new home, the apartment above the Worldwide PCN Headquarters. We had so much help from our church family.

It’s a Small World
Beth Sparrow
You know the song “It’s a Small World After All”? Well the older you get, the truer that is.
Nebraska is a small world. I have lived in Nebraska my entire life. In fact some of my ancestors have been here since 1875. My roots go deep in this state.
