Schools Not Immune From Teacher Shortage

It is a battle you hear about all the time and Polk County school districts are not immune. Nebraska is facing a teacher shortage. Cross County, High Plains, Osceola and Shelby-Rising City schools, along with all other districts in the region, are battling over the same teacher candidates.
A gathering of 150 attended the “Save the Bandstand” fundraiser in Polk on Sunday, April 23. A lunch of pancakes, sausage and fruit was enjoyed by the attendees followed by drawings for raffle items. Employee Shortage Hits Nebraska

Nebraska is full of hard-working people, and generally our unemployment rate is low. However lately nationwide there is an employee shortage. There are more jobs than there are workers. The baby boomers are retiring (or wanting to), and that takes a large portion of the working people.

4-H Family Receives Award

In observance of the Week of the Volunteer, Nebraska 4-H is proud to celebrate some of the 2023 Nebraska 4-H Volunteer Award Winners. The Ray and Betty Vrbka family is receiving the Multi-Generation Family of Volunteers Award.

PCN Sports, Website Earn Awards

LINCOLN — The Polk County News won multiple awards over the weekend in this year’s Nebraska Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. The PCN staff won a first place award for sports page for division C and first place award for the PCN website, www.polkcountynews.net, for divisions C and D.
High Plains seniors Cabot Archer, Anthony Hiett, Kenzie Wruble, Hailey Lindburg, Ashley Van Housen, Mario Lesiak and Austin Van Housen received their degrees.

FFA State Degrees

FFA seniors earned their State FFA Degrees at the State Convention last week. This award is the highest achievement at the state level.

Polk County Celebrates Cancer Survivors at Luncheon

OSCEOLA — The Polk County Health Department hosted a lunch for cancer survivors last Wednesday at the Polk County Fairgrounds. Darla Winslow, director of the health department gave the welcoming comments. She stated it’s been five years since their last lunch, due to COVID.
